Warkentin Fabricating designed and built a fully modular cable ferry system for NAMO, engineered specifically for remote deployment and heavy-duty operation.

The ferry was constructed using:

  • (12) WarFab X-20 barges (10’ x 20’ x 5’)

  • Configured into a large, stable platform capable of handling vehicle traffic

  • Heavy-duty drive-through ramps on both ends, allowing vehicles to drive on and off without reversing

This drive-through configuration significantly improves efficiency, safety, and turnaround time—especially in high-traffic or commercial applications.

Engineering & Build Quality

This was not a light-duty setup—it was built to handle real-world abuse:

  • 1/2” thick steel deck plating across the platform for maximum durability

  • Heavy structural design to support repeated loading from trucks, equipment, and vehicles

  • Built using our standard marine-grade construction practices, including fully welded watertight compartments and reinforced internal framing

Why Modular Was Critical

The client’s biggest requirement—and the reason they came to us—was mobility and flexibility.

We delivered a system that:

  • Can be transported in just 5–6 truckloads

  • Does not need to be built on-site or in the water it operates in

  • Can be relocated between projects or river crossings as needed

This is a major advantage over traditional cable ferries, which are typically fixed, site-built, and costly to move.

Remote Deployment Advantage

Another key benefit of this system is how it performs in remote environments:

  • The 20 ft modular sections allow for easy handling and logistics

  • Barges can be loaded and unloaded using a single large excavator

  • Assembly can be completed on land using airbags, then launched into the water

This eliminates the need for large cranes or specialized marine infrastructure—making it ideal for remote crossings, forestry roads, mining operations, and temporary infrastructure.

Customization & Flexibility

We should also emphasize that this is not a one-size-fits-all product:

  • Ferry size and layout can be fully customized

  • Ramp configurations can be tailored (drive-through, single-sided, etc.)

  • Power systems can be supplied by us or integrated by the client

  • We can provide anything from a bare modular platform to a fully outfitted ferry system
