40’ × 80’ Modular Jack-Up Barge Package: An Elevated Working Platform for Marine Construction

Marine construction, geotechnical drilling, and pile installation often require a working platform that can provide greater stability than a conventional floating barge. When platform movement can interfere with equipment operation and precision work, a jack-up system offers an alternative by elevating the working deck above the water.

At Warkentin Fabricating, we fabricate modular marine platforms designed to support demanding project requirements. Our 40’ × 80’ × 7’ Modular Jack-Up Barge Package combines a large working footprint, integrated lifting mechanisms, and modular construction to provide an elevated platform for a range of marine and infrastructure applications.

Designed for Demanding Marine Applications

With an overall footprint of 40 feet by 80 feet and a height of 7 feet, this modular jack-up barge package is designed around a 100-ton capacity. Its configuration provides space for project equipment, materials, and crew access while incorporating the components required to elevate the platform.

The system consists of individual barge sections assembled into one working platform at the project location. This modular approach supports transport planning and allows the sections to be handled separately during mobilization.

Potential applications include:

  • Geotechnical drilling and marine sampling

  • Pile installation and foundation work

  • Bridge and waterfront construction

  • Marine infrastructure development

  • Equipment support for projects requiring an elevated working deck

The final suitability of the platform depends on project-specific equipment loads, water depth, seabed conditions, and operating requirements.

Integrated Jack-Up System

A key feature of this package is its integrated jack-up arrangement. The lifting mechanisms are incorporated directly into the four corner barge sections, with four 80-foot legs supporting the system.

During operation, the legs are positioned to bear on the seabed, and the lifting mechanisms raise the platform above the water. This arrangement can reduce the effect of floating-platform movement on work activities, making it useful for operations where a more stationary working surface is preferred.

Positioning the lifting mechanisms at the corners also helps preserve the central deck area for equipment placement, material storage, and crew movement.

Actual working elevation and usable water depth depend on leg penetration, required clearance above the water, seabed conditions, and the project's operating requirements.

Modular Construction for Transport and Assembly

Transport and mobilization are important considerations for marine construction projects, particularly when equipment must be moved between job sites.

The 40’ × 80’ platform is assembled from the following modular sections:

  • Five 10’ × 40’ × 7’ barge sections

  • Four 10’ × 20’ × 7’ barge sections

  • Four 10’ × 10’ × 7’ corner barge sections

The four corner sections accommodate the integrated lifting mechanisms. Once transported to the project location, the individual modules are assembled into the complete platform configuration.

This sectional arrangement supports transportation planning and can help accommodate site access and mobilization requirements. Leg handling, unloading, and assembly arrangements should be coordinated with the available equipment and conditions at the project site.

A Working Deck Designed Around Project Needs

The platform's 40’ × 80’ footprint provides room to plan the arrangement of drilling equipment, piling systems, materials, and access routes.

The corner-mounted lifting mechanisms and legs help preserve the central working area, allowing the deck layout to be developed around the intended application. Perimeter railings also provide defined boundaries around the working deck.

Before operation, the proposed equipment layout, concentrated loads, crew access, and operating loads must be reviewed against the platform's final engineering and capacity limits. This helps ensure the configuration is appropriate for the intended work.

Custom Leg Pads for Project-Specific Conditions

Ground and seabed conditions can significantly affect the performance of a jack-up platform. Depending on the site, additional bearing area at the bottom of the legs may be required to distribute loads over a larger surface.

Warkentin Fabricating can fabricate and supply custom leg pads as an additional option, with dimensions considered according to the customer's project requirements.

Larger pads may help distribute leg loads over a greater bearing area, including for projects involving softer ground. However, pad dimensions and suitability must be evaluated against site-specific soil or seabed conditions, bearing capacity, and the loads imposed by the platform.

Custom leg pads are quoted separately and can be discussed during the project planning process.

Supporting Marine Construction and Infrastructure Projects

From geotechnical investigations to pile installation and waterfront construction, elevated working platforms can play an important role in providing access for equipment and crews in marine environments.

The 40’ × 80’ Modular Jack-Up Barge Package brings together a 100-ton capacity, modular barge construction, four integrated lifting mechanisms, four 80-foot legs, and perimeter railings in one platform configuration.

Each project presents different challenges. Water depth, seabed conditions, equipment requirements, transportation limitations, and operating loads all influence the final setup. Reviewing these factors early helps determine the appropriate configuration and any additional requirements.
