How Custom Barges Solved a Major Logistical Challenge in Nashville

When it comes to marine logistics and industrial operations, sometimes standard equipment just doesn’t cut it. That was exactly the case for Kosmos Cement down on the Cumberland River in Nashville, Tennessee.

Faced with a unique spacing problem that halted their standard unloading process, they reached out to the team at Warkentin Fabricating. The solution? A custom fleet of spacer barges designed to keep their operations moving smoothly.

Here is a look behind the scenes at how this project came together and how the operation works.

The Challenge: A Disconnect on the Cumberland River

Kosmos Cement relies on a specific river setup to unload their material. Their main infrastructure consists of two large anchoring piles driven into the riverbed. For their standard operations to work efficiently, their main barge needs to secure tightly to both of these piles, allowing it to safely pull up and down along the river.

However, they hit a major logistical snag: the main hopper barges they purchased simply weren't long enough to bridge the distance between the two piles. Without a secure connection to both points, the barge couldn't be stabilized properly, completely stalling their ability to safely unload cement from the river.

The Solution: WARFAB X Spacer Barges

To bridge the gap, literally, Warkentin Fabricating stepped in to supply a custom fleet of specialized equipment.

Equipment Specifications:

  • Product: WARFAB X Barges

  • Quantity Supplied: 6 sectional barges

  • Dimensions: 10' x 40' x 5' each

By linking these six WARFAB X units together, they created a robust, ultra-secure barge system. These spacer units connect directly to the main hopper barge on one end and attach tightly to the anchoring pile on the other.

This added length completely secured the entire setup in place, providing the stability required to handle the heavy-duty industrial unloading process.

Got a Unique Marine or Fabrication Challenge?

Every project comes with its own set of constraints, whether it's a tight footprint, unique river conditions, or equipment compatibility issues. As this Nashville project proves, a custom fabrication solution can keep your project on schedule and your operations seamless.

If you are looking for sectional barges, custom spacer units, or have a unique fabrication challenge of your own, the team at Warkentin Fabricating is ready to help.
