Building essential infrastructure in Canada’s remote, northern regions demands more than standard logistics, it requires true innovation, heavy-duty engineering, and strong partnerships.

A prime example of this collaboration is our recent joint effort with Bison Modular. Together, the we played a vital role in executing a massive, transformational $30-million infrastructure hub led by the Pikangikum First Nation, which features a brand-new, 19,500-square-foot community grocery store.
The Project: Food Sovereignty and Economic Growth
For years, the remote, fly-in community of Pikangikum First Nation (located roughly 500 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario) relied on outside entities for its grocery supply. To reclaim economic sovereignty and lower food costs, community leadership launched a major community hub project. The development includes a multi-service modular grocery store, complete with a pharmacy, hardware section, laundromat, and prep kitchen, alongside a motel and diner complex.
To bypass the compressed timelines and extreme costs of traditional northern construction, Bison Modular built the massive facility in specialized sections at their yard in Beausejour, Manitoba. However, getting these heavy modular units across the water and safely onto the shores of Pikangikum required a specialized marine transport solution.
That is where Warkentin Fabricating stepped in.

The Solution: Custom Marine Engineering by Warkentin Fabricating
To bridge the final, critical water gap, Warkentin Fabricating engineered and supplied a robust, purpose-built marine transport setup capable of hauling Bison Modular’s large structures safely to their final foundations.
Warkentin outfitted the operation with a heavy-duty fleet designed specifically for northern shoreline deployments:
A 20’ x 80’ x 4’ Transport Barge: Engineered for high weight capacity and stability, providing a massive, flat footprint to safely roll and float the modular buildings across the water.
Hydraulic Ramps: Integrated directly onto the barge to accommodate fluctuating water lines and rugged terrain, ensuring seamless, secure loading and unloading of massive payloads directly onto unpaved shorelines.
An 8’ x 24’ x 3’ Pushboat: A compact, high-torque marine vessel tasked with precisely navigating and pushing the heavily loaded barge through northern waterways.
Efficiency in Motion
By utilizing modular construction combined with Warkentin’s heavy-duty marine transport solutions, the project team slashed typical northern construction timelines by an estimated 30% to 50%. The video captures a pivotal milestone in this timeline: a massive, precision-built Bison Modular structural unit, securely wrapped and protected, being smoothly navigated across the water and safely offloaded onto the rugged Pikangikum shoreline using Warkentin's hydraulic ramp system.
A Shared Commitment to Northern Communities
This collaboration highlights what can be achieved when industrial fabrication meets advanced modular engineering. For Bison Modular, it meant delivering on their promise to build reliable, tailored infrastructure for Indigenous and First Nations communities. For Warkentin Fabricating, it proved once again that no terrain is too challenging and no logistical gap is too wide for expertly crafted marine equipment.

As the Pikangikum community hub prepares to fully open its doors, both companies take pride in having supplied the literal and figurative vehicles that are helping drive food security, local employment, and economic sovereignty in the North.
